Rig Design & Manufacturing

State-of-the-Art Rig Design & Build

Advanced drilling and service rig solutions, engineered for performance, safety, and reliability — in the operating environments that matter.

This page is deliberately separate from ICON’s contract drilling services. Rig Design and Manufacturing covers what ICON builds — not what ICON operates — and that distinction matters to the operators, EPCs, and procurement teams evaluating ICON as a rig supplier rather than a drilling contractor.

ICON designs and delivers land rigs from 750HP to 3000HP, in AC or SCR electrical configurations, built to a standardized platform and customized to the client’s well program. Standardization means common components, simpler maintenance, and faster parts turnaround across the fleet — not a different one-off rig every time.

Built to the Program, Not the Catalog

Beyond standard drilling rigs, ICON designs and delivers:

  • Fast-moving and walking rig systems
  • Desert, arctic, tropical, and conventional configurations
  • Custom rigs built around a specific well program
  • High-capacity pipe-racking systems
  • Integrated drilling-control systems
  • Mechanized pipe-handling solutions

Key Systems We Integrate

ICON rig packages are built around proven, purpose-selected systems — not whatever’s cheapest to source that week.

Mechanized iron roughnecks for pipe handling

Mechanized Pipe Handling

Reduces manual tong work and crew exposure on the rig floor.

Automated pipe catwalk system

Automated Catwalk

Faster, safer pipe handling from ground to rig floor.

High-pressure mud pump package

High-Pressure Mud System

Sized to the well program, not oversold or undersized.

From Well Program to Delivery

1

Client Well-Program Review

Understand the target depth, formation, and operating conditions before anything is designed.

2

Basis-of-Design Development

Translate the well program into rig requirements.

3

Equipment Selection

Match components to the job, not the shelf.

4

Detailed Engineering

Full engineering package before fabrication starts.

5

Procurement

Sourced against the engineering package, not guesswork.

6

Fabrication & Assembly

Built to the design, inspected as it’s built.

7

Quality Inspection

Checked against the plan at every stage, not just at the end.

8

Factory Acceptance Testing

Proven to work before it ships.

9

Certification & Documentation

Full documentation package delivered with the rig.

10

Delivery, Commissioning & Training

On location, running, and the crew trained on it.

Standards

ICON designs and manufactures drilling and service rigs in accordance with internationally recognized industry standards and applicable engineering requirements.

Depending on the rig configuration and equipment supplied, our designs may incorporate applicable requirements from leading API and ISO standards, including:

  • API Spec 4F – Drilling and Well Servicing Structures
  • API Spec 7K – Drilling and Well Servicing Equipment
  • API Spec 8C – Drilling and Production Hoisting Equipment
  • API Spec 9A – Wire Rope
  • API Spec 7-1 – Rotary Drill Stem Elements
  • ISO 10424-2 – Rotary Drilling Equipment, Rotary Shouldered Connections
  • API RP 4G – Operation, Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair of Drilling and Well Servicing Structures

Applicable standards are identified during the engineering and basis-of-design process according to the rig configuration, operating environment, equipment package, and client requirements. Compliance, inspection, testing, and certification requirements are documented as part of the rig’s engineering and quality documentation.

Where required, ICON can engineer and document equipment for specific regional, regulatory, and client requirements.
